A self assessment tax return is a declaration made to HMRC to tell them how much income you have made in the previous tax year.

You have until the 31st January the following year to complete a self assessment.

It captures all your income and capital gains, including employment income, pension income, self employed income, dividend income and interest income.

Because of taxes. If you are in regular employment, you will usually be taxed at source. However, if you have any other income, you will have earned an income that has not been taxed.

HMRC needs to know how much you have earned so that they know how much tax you need to pay.

At Jacksons Accountants, we offer a comprehensive range of services for freelancers at an affordable, fixed monthly fee.

Our services include bookkeeping, self-assessment, corporation tax submissions, Companies House submissions, HMRC registration, PAYE, VAT, CIS, and more. We can also assist you with funding applications and provide supporting documents to lenders, should you require a mortgage or personal finance.

On top of bookkeeping, we can help to simplify your internal processes, build tailored Excel files to streamline your reporting needs, assist you in accessing finance for your company and much more.

You will need proof of any income you have so that we can complete your self-assessment.

Employment income is usually documented by a P60 or a P45. Other income needs validating from records that you have kept, for example, rental income will be seen on your bank statements.

You should keep proof of any expenses incurred through your self-employed business, such as receipts or invoices.
